Traditional prayer can be difficult – sitting still, saying the right words, keeping focused. Or you may feel like you’re on autopilot, flipping through your list of prayer requests. Praying in Color, a book by Sybil MacBeth, presents a simple but profound way to pray while playing. Praying in Color is praying through doodling. Doodling is a natural outlet for fidgeting and helps you stay focused. Doodling prayers allows you to “sit” with the people and things you are praying for without needing the right words. But it’s not just for artists! Far from it. This practice welcomes all artistic abilities to focus their attention and pray colorfully.

Why try Praying in Color? Because

  • Words escape you;
  • Sitting still and staying focused is a challenge;
  • You want to physically pray, not just mentally;
  • You want to just hang out with God but don’t know how;
  • You prefer visual, concrete styles of prayer;
  • Your prayer life has gotten stale or tiresome;

Participants should bring paper (preferably white) and colorful writing utensils (colored pencils, markers, watercolors). Learn the basics and some simple ways to get started before having a chance to try it out yourself. The group will come back together for a time of sharing at the end.
