This workshop is a four-part series, meeting on Wednesdays (Jan 29, Feb 5, Feb 12, and Feb 19 with a snow make-up date of Mar 4) at 9:30 am – 11:30 am. The class is a progression so we recommend attending every class. If you are interested but have a scheduling conflict with one of the dates, please contact us.

Screens are ubiquitous in our lives, including in our sanctuaries. Screens open up many opportunities, but using them effectively is difficult. Good use can engage and expand your message, but a clunky, outdated, or overly-busy screen will distract the audience. If you’re not sure how — or when — to use a screen during the sermon, you need this interactive series of workshops. We will look at the benefits and pitfalls of using a screen during prelude, worship, and preaching.

CEUs are available for this workshop series. Please contact us by January 15 if you are interested.

Week 1: The Art of Preaching with a Screen
Week 1 focuses on you, as a preacher with a screen. How do you currently use a screen? Where are you stuck? How do you plan the visuals alongside the sermon? We’ll take a look at various ways to use a screen during your sermon, and also talk about pitfalls to avoid.

  • Different Ways to Use a Screen During a Sermon
  • Constructing a Sermon with the Screen in Mind

Week 2: Designing the Screen
In this session, we’ll look at using PowerPoint easily as a design tool. We’ll look at best practices for backgrounds, fonts and images. We’ll cover where to find images, copyright issues, how to use film clips, where to buy templates, and how to make it work in your schedule.

  • Powerpoint as a Design Tool
  • Backgrounds, Fonts, and Images
  • Where to find images, where to purchase themes
  • How to find, save, insert and use film clips

Week 3: Other uses of the Screen During Worship
This week we’ll consider the many other ways to use a screen during worship: to share information; to expand the feelings of connectedness in the service; and to deepen relationships and mission.

  • Using screens for information, relationship, and interaction in all parts of the worship service
  • Visual do’s and don’ts

Week 4: You Do It!
Bring your own project (maybe one you’ve actually used!) for the chance to get group feedback. This week will also be customized to address topics of particular interest to this group.

  • Opportunities for participants to get group feedback on their own projects.
  • Other topics that are of interest to the group that were not covered in another week.
